If you've spent five minutes on pet TikTok, you've seen the ad: a dog snoozing peacefully while its owner trims its nails with a tiny, "whisper-quiet" grinder. No wrestling. No blood. No stress.
It's a great promise, because nail day is genuinely miserable for millions of dogs. So a wave of near-identical grinders flooded the market to cash in on it. Two of the most heavily advertised right now are the Heusom "Silent Groom Pro" and the Maximutt Quiet Grinder.
They make the same promise, and their ads sound nearly identical. But hold them side by side and it's obvious they're not the same tool. They're built very differently, and that difference shows the moment you switch them on. So we did the boring thing nobody in the comments section does: we bought both, and we read the reviews people leave after the honeymoon is over, especially the angry ones.
What we found is that "looks the same" and "works the same" are very different things.
First, why the two grinders end up so far apart.
A grinder lives or dies on a few things: does it actually take the nail down, is it quiet enough that the dog tolerates it, and does it keep working past week two. Heusom's own buyers say it fails all three. Below are the seven differences that matter, each one straight from real reviews.

It's very quiet, and my dog actually relaxes. Sometimes he even dozes off.

My dog used to freak out seeing the traditional clippers. Now with this grinder she doesn't seem too panicked by nail trim day. It's very quiet, easy to use, and the battery lasts forever!

I hadn't planned on writing a review for this one. But within five minutes I had finished ALL 10 of my Pomeranian's nails. I can't tell you how shocked I am by how QUIETLY and quickly it takes them down.

I've been a dog groomer for years. Out of the past 4 nail grinders I've used over 30 years this is by far the best one. It's not nearly as noisy as a regular Dremel.

I bought this for my Great Dane. With clippers it would take two people to get her nails done. With this she let me trim her nails all on my own.

My Greyhound did not like the noise of my old Dremel drill. This device worked fabulously. She even started falling asleep by the end!

Will this work on a big dog with thick nails?

My dog has black nails and hates anyone messing with her feet. We finally found this gem. We don't have any trauma or violent jerking that we used to have.

I have a new puppy and my bigger, louder nail grinder is too much for him. This one is PERFECT. It is whisper quiet and has a safeguard built in.

Having a big Rottweiler with dark nails always made grooming a tricky guessing game. It's basically silent, keeping us both calm. Now our grooming routine is smoother and more peaceful than ever!

My 30 lb rescue is afraid of a lot of noises. She allows me to trim all her nails with this. I bought this in April of 2025 and it still works exactly the same!

Holds a charge for a long time. I have one dog who is so scared of nail trims he will scream, and he doesn't mind when I use this instead.

I get nervous trimming their nails because they jerk their feet. This grinder is a much safer solution. They don't run when I pull it out.
